Shane McGregor: Tributes after death of popular NI teacher

Tributes have been paid to a popular teacher in Northern Ireland following his death.

On Saturday details emerged of the passing of Shane McGregor, who was the Head of English at St Patrick's College in Maghera.

He was described as an "esteemed colleague" who will be "sorely missed" and staff at the school said they were "heartbroken" at the news.

It is understood Mr McGregor, of Draperstown, passed away suddenly on December 10.

In a tribute on social media, the school said: "The College this afternoon learned with deep regret the death of Mr Shane McGregor - Head of English, esteemed colleague and friend.

"We offer our sincere condolences to his parents , Shaun and Mary , sister Joanne (Schofield), brother-in-law Paul, godson Jake and large family circle

"Shane will be very sorely missed by staff and pupils. We are heartbroken. May Shane rest in peace . St Patrick, pray for him."

A notice from K Murray Memorial and Funeral Directors states: "Dearly beloved son of Shaun and Mary, brother to Joanne (Schofield), brother-in-law Paul, godson Jake and large family circle.

"Family have asked for a strictly private wake for family and friends. Funeral arrangements to be announced later. Sacred heart of Jesus, have mercy on his soul."

Others paid tribute to Mr McGregor on social media with one saying his students "adored him" he was a "true English specialist loving his subject and his passion for it was passed to his students".

Another said: "Mr McGregor was an amazing teacher. He was so passionate about his subject and the education of his pupils. I can say for certain that he pushed and inspired me as a pupil and I hope some day to be half the teacher he was. May he rest in peace."

Mr McGregor was also described as a "big gentle giant full of fun", and "the funniest, wittiest, most intelligent person and the most loyal and genuine of friends".
