'Shame on Scrooge Tories for scandalous Universal Credit raid on those who need it most'

We are reminded every day that the Tory Government is Scrooge, not Santa.

The latest scam to be uncovered is the extent to which it is grabbing money from low-income households that rely on the Universal Credit pittance to survive.

In the cost of living crisis, the Department for Work and Pensions deducting an average of £62 from 2.1 million struggling households in a single month is a scandalous raid.

Making a miserly welfare system even worse is disgraceful. The basic UC rate is only £334.91 a month for those aged 25 and over before less-than-generous top-ups are applied for housing, children and any disabilities.

Rishi Sunak is the UK's richest prime minister (Rory Arnold / No10 Downing Street)

If this government had any decency it would stop seizing money from those with the least. But the Tories don’t have any decency.

Multi-millionaire Rishi Sunak, the richest Prime Minister in history, spending more on a pair of shoes than some people have to live on for a month is intolerable inequality.

The death of 26-year-old beautician Elle Edwards – who was shot in the head while celebrating Christmas at a pub with family and friends – is heartbreaking.

The tragedy is heightened by the fact police believe she wasn’t the intended victim.

Somebody somewhere will know who pulled the trigger.

We plead with them to do the right thing and inform the police.

A family are mourning a young woman who was cruelly cheated of her future.

Whoever has her blood on their hands does not deserve to be free.

Bouncing back

World Cups are fantastic but it’s club football that really hits the back of the net for many fans.

The exciting return to the Premier League proved that England and Wales being knocked out and Scotland failing to qualify isn’t the referee’s final whistle this season.
