SFA dismiss Dundee's appeal against SPFL fine over pitch

Dundee have lost their appeal against a £186,000 fine handed down by the SPFL over the state of the pitch at Dens Park.

The Scottish FA has dismissed the Premiership club's case in full.

Dundee enlisted their legal team to fight the SPFL over the punishment following five postponed games at their home ground during the 2023/24 campaign.

The sanction totalled to £186,000, however, £120,000 of this fine is suspended unless there are any other weather-related call-offs at Dens until the end of next season.

Dundee were unhappy at the severity of the punishment and looked to challenge the league's body with the SFA.

It can now be confirmed that this was rejected at an appellate tribunal, and so, the outstanding £66,000 will need to be paid up.

Two matches against Rangers were called off in March and early April, while Dundee's home games against Ross County, Aberdeen and St Johnstone also fell foul to the weather.

The club is now spending extensive time addressing the drainage issues that caused such harm to the pitch last season.

In addition to these costs, as well as the fine due to be paid to the SPFL, St Johnstone is chasing their Tayside rivals for money. They want to be paid for the back-up cover they provided, with McDiarmid Park made available to Dundee had their game with Rangers been called off for a third time.

Rangers also want compensation from Dundee over the costs incurred for their hotel stays in St Andrews, and travelling expenses on both occasions that the game failed to go ahead live on Sky Sports.

While the pitch fiasco was an unwelcome situation for the club upon their return back to the big time, Tony Docherty enjoyed a superb first season in management by guiding the club to a sixth-place finish.
