A LACK of sewer overflow monitoring in Scotland, combined with the prospect of a wetter and stormier El Niño winter, could pose a significant risk to public and environmental health, environmental charities have warned.
While sewer overflows are designed to protect communities from flooding during heavy rainfall, the contents released can include harmful pathogens which jeopardise water quality, disrupt aquatic ecosystems, and pose a risk to human health.
