Sevilla 'set Diego Carlos asking price' as clubs join Newcastle United in bidding for defender

A Spanish journalist says that Sevilla will accept an offer of €50m - about £42m - from Newcastle United for Diego Carlos, but the defender is now reportedly being pursued by several clubs.

Newcastle United are currently trying to sign the 28-year-old centre-back from Sevilla, who are second in La Liga, just five points behind Real Madrid.

However, a Spanish journalist reports that Sevilla want substantially more than the reported offer already made by Newcastle.

The situation has become even more difficult this afternoon after Sky Sports News reported that another, unnamed Premier League club has matched the bid, while an Italian club has made an offer too, though is believed to be lower.

In a clip tweeted by Football Daily, the journalist Alvaro Montero said he had spoken to people inside Sevilla who told him that the club want €50m to part with him at this point in time.

Montero said: “We have to remember that the player has an €80m clause, around an €80m clause. There have been two offers, €25m and €30m.

“As far as I know, the player has not accepted any offer, because he has just transmitted this information to Sevilla, so it seems that the player has been extremely polite with his club and correct.

“I believe myself after asking the people inside the club, in Sevilla football club, they will accept an offer around €50m."

Sky Sports News then reported that another Premier League club has matched the offer already made by Newcastle, though they did not know the name of the club.

Fans had hoped that he might be signed in time for Saturday’s match against Leeds United, with Newcastle in desperate need of better quality defenders, but that hope looks unlikely.
