Severe thunderstorms forecast for Queensland's south-west

Severe thunderstorms are forecast for Queensland's south-west today with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicting heavy rain and possible flash flooding.

Severe storms are also possible around the Granite Belt, Scenic Rim, and the rest of the state's west and north-west interior.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread inland and the eastern half of the state over the next few days.

BOM meteorologist Felim Hanniffy said light winds had allowed the humidity to build up, increasing the risk of heavy rains.

"We haven't had a big flush out of that stagnate air for a week or two," he said.

"When you get several days of that humid air mass it allows the moisture to build up and it means rainfall is particularly the primary risk.

"Over the next few days the trough that's further west is going to move east and it's going to bring more and more storm activity across eastern and central districts, the focus shifting away from the south-west and shifting across the interior and east of the state."

Recent high humidity was not unusual for this time of year, Mr Hannify said.

"This year it’s probably been a shock to the system given the weeks leading up to it were pretty cool, so when we get a bit of normality returning it feels a bit of a shock to people."

Humidity should begin to drop towards the end of the week but temperatures will remain high into the weekend, he said.

"It's not till maybe Sunday we'll see a cooling off of the daytime maxes – we do see a change in the humidity from Friday but it's not going to do much to the day the maxes," he said.

A monsoon may develop across Far North Queensland during the week but the chance of it developing into a tropical cyclone in the next seven days is very low.
