I reckon Severance is one of the best TV shows we’ve been blessed with in a looooong time, but due to the writers’ strike and a bunch of in-fighting, it’s taken YEARS for season two to get made.
But the time is now! Severance season two is hitting Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025 — almost three years after season one premiered — and a new trailer just dropped. It has left me with so many questions, but my god, does it look good.
In case you haven’t seen the show (honestly, go watch it right now), the sci-fi thriller’s premise is super intriguing from the get-go. It follows a group of workers at Lumen Industries who choose to “sever” a surgical procedure that splits their memories between their work and home lives. It means the innies working know nothing of their outie’s life outside the office, and vice versa.
The finale of season one finished with a *dramatic* cliffhanger where the innies managed to catch a glimpse of their life in the outside world, and some major secrets were revealed. So, what do we know about season two? The trailer has dropped some pretty massive clues.
Watch the trailer for Severance Season 2 now:
From the trailer, we can see that Mark Scout (Adam Scott) is on a mission to figure out what’s really going on at Lumen Industries. He’s desperate to find his outie’s wife Gemma — believed to be dead — who he knows is alive and working at Lumen as Dr Casey, the wellness director. However, there’s a spanner in the works.
When he finally arrives at his office, his entire team has changed. Instead of Dylan George (Zach Cherry), Irving Bailiff (John Tuturro) and Helly Riggs (Britt Lower), they have been replaced by Alia Shawkat, Bob Balaban and Stefano Carannate. His eerily calm manager Mr Milchick (Tramell Tillman) welcomes Mark back with a bunch of blue balloons and says, “Welcome back, Mark S. Been a minute”.
What do the balloons mean?!! How long has Mark been gone? January 17 can’t come soon enough!!
Which cast members are returning for Severance Season 2?
Although Mark’s team has completely changed, the trailer gives glimpses of the old characters that we know and love, so our faves will be returning. This includes Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, John Tuturro, Dichen Lachman (Ms. Casey), Jen Tullock (Devon Scout-Hale), Michael Chernus (Ricken Hale), Christopher Walken (Burt Goodman) and Patricia Arquette (Harmony Cobel).
New cast members include Sarah Bock, Gwendoline Christie, Merrit Wever, John Noble, Alia Shawkat, Bob Balaban and Stefano Carannate.
What’s the plot for Severance Season 2?
The official synopsis states that “Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe”. Ooooh. I’m hooked.
And if you’re worried about the show becoming aimless or not having an ending in mind, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Creator and showrunner Dan Erickson has apparently “mapped it out in his head”, according to season two writer Mohamad El Masri. In fact, when El Masri joined the team, he was handed a “50-page Bible” about the show, proving there are rules set in stone for this universe. That means there must be some reason for the Lumen room filled with goats!!!
“He’s not like the ‘let’s make this up as we go’ guy,” El Masri told Winter is Coming. “There is a method to the madness of everything you see on Severance, and he’s thinking about it day and night… Dan’s the answer man. Trust in him, for sure.”
When will Severance Season 2 be released in Australia?
The first episode of Severance season two will drop on Apple TV+ in Australia on Friday 17 January, 2025. Episodes will be dropping weekly until the finale on 21 March, 2025. I can’t wait to inhale these 10 episodes.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t take another three years before season three. I don’t think my heart could take another wait like this!
