Several homes evacuated after 'suspect item' found following van fire

A NUMBER of people were forced to leave their homes following the discovery of a "suspect item" after a van caught fire.

Police Scotland were called to Benvue Road in Lennoxtown around 11.20pm on Saturday, June 8 following reports of a van on fire.

The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.

However, following the extinguishing of the fire a suspect item was discovered in the vehicle, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called.

Nearby properties were evacuated as a precaution and police remain in the area while investigations continue.

Police have confirmed the bomb disposal team have made the suspect item safe.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A suspect item was found at the vehicle and this has been made safe by Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

“A number of properties were evacuated as a precaution.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and a police presence will remain in the area while this work is ongoing.”
