With Easter just six weeks away, many are choosing to cut out daily habits and ditching unhealthy luxuries.
One of the most common things people attempt to give up is sugar, and the benefits are obvious — reduce weight, improve dental health and stave off more serious medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
But it's not as easy as it sounds — sugar has an addictive quality and can be incredibly difficult to ditch. That's because food in general is a natural reward, and sugary food and drink in particular can have a powerful stimulating effect on your brain’s reward system, causing you to crave more of the food. Some studies have even found that sugar triggers the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens, which is the same area of the brain implicated in the response to addictive drugs, reports Healthline.
