Young girl among 10 dead in Donegal Applegreen explosion as search continues for 'further fatalities'

The death toll from an explosion at a Donegal petrol station has risen to 10 and the search for further fatalities is ongoing.

A young girl is among those killed in the blast, as gardai confirmed four men, three women, two teenagers (one girl and one boy) and another young girl of primary school age have died.

A search and recovery operation is continuing in the village of Creeslough, as dozens of rescue workers try to locate several people who are still missing.

Hot drinks, water and food were handed out to members of the emergency services and the media as search and recovery efforts continued. A local Garda was seen comforting a woman in tears as she was led towards the scene.

Friday afternoon's blast ripped through the Applegreen service station and convenience store and adjacent buildings.

Having announced three fatalities on Friday night, gardai confirmed a further four deaths on Saturday morning, another two just before midday and one more at a press conference this afternoon.

A spokesperson said: "Emergency services remain at the scene in a search and recovery phase of this operation. An Garda Siochana can now confirm nine fatalities as a result of this incident. The search and recovery for further fatalities continues."

Eight people were transferred to hospital on Friday.

Gardai have not provided any information on the suspected cause of the explosion.

President Michael D Higgins expressed his shock at the "terrible tragedy" while Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said he will visit the village and has pledged support for the community to help get through the "enormous trauma".

Donegal TD Pearse Doherty, who was at the scene on Saturday morning, said there were a number of people missing.

Prayers were said in the local church in Creeslough on Saturday morning for all those suffering. The congregation at St Michael's Church heard there was a "tsunami" of grief in the community.
