Seven arrests as stop and search powers introduced following spate of 'violent incidents' last weekend

Seven people have been arrested after stop and search powers were introduced following a spate of 'violent incidents' across Brinnington over the weekend.

Stop and search powers were implemented across the area of Stockport after groups of men were reportedly seen wielding weapons amid the incidents on Saturday and Sunday.

Seven people, aged between 16 and 37, have now been arrested on suspicion of offences including aggravated burglary and assault. Enquiries are currently ongoing to identify any further individuals who may have been involved in the incidents.

Greater Manchester Police have not provided any further details about the various incidents, but the Manchester Evening News understands there was a police scene in place on Penshurst Road on Sunday evening following reports of cars being damaged.

Detective Inspector Gareth Beasley, from GMP's Stockport district, said: "The s60 order was put in place in response to reports we received over the weekend. We always take reports of violent crime very seriously, and I hope that these arrests show that we are determined to keep our community safe.

"Our investigations are ongoing with a view to bringing those responsible to justice and we are continuing with high visibility patrols to reassure local residents."

If you have any concerns, or information in relation to these incidents, or if you wish to report a crime you can contact police online via www.gmp.police.uk or by calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency. Details can be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
