Sergio Reguilon opens up on his move to Tottenham, Gareth Bale and being too emotional

Sergio Reguilon has opened up on his footballing career so far, as he remains in N17 during the international break. The Spaniard has made 29 appearances for Tottenham so far this season, scoring two goals and registering three assists in his 23 Premier League features.

Reguilon was a regular in Antonio Conte's XI, until Ryan Sessegnon returned from injury and took over in the left wing-back spot. However, with the 21-year-old injured once again, it has made way for the Spain international to step back in.

The 25-year-old has produced a mixture of displays when he has been given opportunities. He always puts in the effort to get up and down the left flank and has seen improvements since the Italian's arrival. However, there is still work to be done, especially with his attacking flair.

In his most recent interview with Spurs, Reguilon firstly spoke about Gareth Bale, whom he moved to Tottenham with in 2020, "I was waiting for Real [Madrid] because I was the biggest fan of Gareth. He knows, he knows, he knows. I always speak with him about that.

"When I looked at Gareth I went running there and I said, 'Gareth, please, one picture' and he said 'Okay yes, of course' and after five years, I was playing with him. For me, I was dreaming, to play with my idol and we're still speaking now," Reguilon explained.

In the 31 Premier League matches the Spaniard was in the Lilywhites squad for in his first season, Reguilon started 26 of those. The 25-year-old went on to explain about his move to the the capital, from Real Madrid.

"I think to take the decision to come here to the Premier League, to fight to become a better player, because it's not easy to leave your family, your friends, your girlfriend in Spain and come here for one dream. I think for me, that's my biggest challenge.

"I want to show to all people that I can play in the Premier League, for me that also was important and now I'm so happy here." Reguilon also admitted that he didn't expect the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to be as incredible as he now knows it is. "My expectation was high [of the stadium] but when I arrived, my expectations went out and now it's more than high," he added.

The Spaniard's most recent goal came in Spurs' 5-0 victory over Everton, which was Reguilon's first league appearance in about a month, and it took him less than a minute to slot the ball into the back of the net. In his interview, the defender spoke about playing again. "Now I feel so happy because I can come back, help the team. I can do my job, that's to enjoy playing football," he said.

Reguilon's passion and aggression was evident in Tottenham's 3-1 victory over West Ham, in their last game before the international break. Kurt Zouma kicked the ball towards the corner flag for a Spurs corner and it hit Son Heung-min on the calf, which led him to fall to the ground.

The Spaniard ran straight over to the Irons defender and Michail Antonio slammed Reguilon after the game, for supposedly slapping Aaron Cresswell in the face. This could be the type of thing the 25-year-old was referring to when he spoke about the one downfall he has been trying to work on this season.

"This year I'm learning to stay calm. I'm a person who's too emotional sometimes in football and also in my private life," the defender admitted. "I have to control myself and say, 'Sergio, relax sometimes. Take life with more calm.'"

Reguilon will hope that after the international break he will get more opportunities to impress Conte and make a strong enough case to not be dropped from Tottenham's regular XI, once Sessegnon recovers from his injury.
