September 2026 School Holidays: State-wise list of school closures, Check Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, and other festivals and regional holidays across India

Students across India may have several festival and regional holidays in September, with occasions such as Janmashtami on September 4, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, Vishwakarma Puja on September 17 and Anant Chaturdashi/Ganesh Visarjan on September 25 observed as holidays in some states. However, school holiday dates can differ based on the state, education board and individual institution’s academic calendar. Parents and students are advised to check the latest circular or holiday schedule issued by their school before considering any date as a confirmed holiday.

September 2026 School Holidays

1. Janmashtami School Holiday

Janmashtami will fall on Friday, September 4, 2026, and schools in several parts of India may remain closed to mark the festival. The occasion celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna and is observed widely across the country. Since Janmashtami falls on a Friday, students whose schools have Saturday-Sunday weekends could potentially enjoy a three-day break from September 4 to September 6. However, whether Saturday is a holiday will depend on the school’s regular weekly schedule and local holiday calendar.

2. Ganesh Chaturthi School Holiday

Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on Monday, September 14, 2026, and schools in several parts of India may observe a holiday on the occasion. The festival is celebrated on a large scale in Maharashtra and is also observed in states such as Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. For students whose schools have Saturday and Sunday holidays, the festival could create a three-day break from September 12 to September 14. However, this will depend on the school’s holiday policy and whether September 12, the second Saturday, is a scheduled holiday.

3. Vishwakarma Puja School Holiday

Schools in Bihar, Assam and some parts of Gujarat may remain closed on Vishwakarma Puja, a festival dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma, who is traditionally revered as the divine architect and craftsman.

4. Anant Chaturdashi And Ganesh Visarjan School Holiday

Another significant date for students in certain regions is September 25, 2026, when Anant Chaturdashi and Ganesh Visarjan may be observed as a school holiday in Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat and some other areas.
