Senua takes Hellblade in a new direction with action-adventure gameplay

Ninja Theory has officially revealed Senua, a new game starring the iconic heroine from the Hellblade series. It builds on the foundations of Hellblade while dramatically expanding its scope, transforming the franchise into a more ambitious action-adventure experience.

The title was announced during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. It marks a major evolution for the franchise, expanding beyond the more focused experiences of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

Unlike its predecessors, the developer describes Senua as a full-fledged action-adventure game. Studio head Dom Matthews said the team wanted to build on the storytelling and atmosphere that defined the Hellblade series while giving players more agency through expanded gameplay systems.

Set after the events of both previous games, Senua follows the warrior as she journeys through her vision of purgatory, a twisted version of her childhood homeland. She is a Celtic warrior trapped between life and death, and must battle through her vision to reach the afterlife and reunite with the loved ones she has lost.

While it is not an open-world game, the game features a single interconnected world roughly twice the size of Hellblade II, offering more exploration, which is also being expanded significantly. The game’s combat has received one of the biggest overhauls.

Players will now be able to fight multiple enemies simultaneously, make use of stealth approaches, wield a variety of weapons, and unlock special Focus abilities that can be used both in combat and exploration. The developer is also introducing larger-scale boss battles, something the studio says will be a major feature of the experience.

Players can revisit locations, uncover secrets, and use newly acquired abilities to access previously unreachable areas. The new direction comes partly in response to feedback from players. According to Matthews, many fans praised Hellblade II’s presentation and narrative but wanted deeper gameplay and greater freedom in how they interacted with Senua.

Traversal has likewise been enhanced with faster movement, more verticality, and additional actions such as climbing, vaulting, and jumping. These systems are designed to give players more freedom while moving through Senua’s haunting world.

The game’s title reflects its new identity. Matthews explained that the studio deliberately avoided calling it Hellblade III, viewing the project as a fresh step forward rather than a direct continuation of the previous formula.

With a larger focus on combat, exploration, and player choice, Senua appears set to be Ninja Theory’s most ambitious take on the character yet, while still retaining the psychological storytelling and immersive atmosphere that made the series stand out in the first place.

Senua is scheduled to launch in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass. More details about the game will be shared closer to the release.
