A family salon in Arnold is preparing to open a new sensory area which will provide hair cuts for children with additional needs.
Pure Kutz, in Front Street, is designating an area for children who wouldn't usually like having their hair trimmed, which will include fibre optic lights, bubble tubes, touch points and TVs.
"We get a lot of children with additional needs and their parents get a bit apprehensive about coming and get stressed themselves," said Kelsie Carter, who runs the salon along with her husband, Gareth.
"These kinds of things are a must, I think more people need to be more aware of these types of needs. We don't want people to come in here and feel left out and isolated, we want to give everyone an enjoyable experience.
"I think kids like it here because we can get down to their level of acting like a child and having a giggle."
Gareth and Kelsie, of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, have run the hairdressers for more than six years, employing around five staff and priding themselves on catering for all types of people.
The sensory area is yet another step towards inclusivity. The section is partitioned off from the rest of the salon, creating a "safe, private area", Gareth said.
He added that it had been "built from scratch" over the last two months
"We've always catered for families and we get a lot of children with additional needs that don't like it done. We already have a corner for it but we thought we'd up it a step.
"It's something we've picked up since starting the salon, it's something no-one else offers and we feel we can do our best to give something back and help as many people as possible.
"It's just a nice thing to bring to the high street, the borough and its surrounding area."
The area is set to be officially opened by Gedling mayor Meredith Lawrence on Saturday, February 5, and Gareth said they already have plenty of bookings.
