Senior US doctor issues warning about potential Russian plague outbreak

  • US health agencies and the State Department are monitoring a suspected pneumonic plague outbreak in eastern Russia following the death of a laboratory technician.
  • Darya Shipilova, a worker at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute, died in early October after reportedly breaking a test tube containing the Yersinia pestis pathogen.
  • Russian authorities have placed nearly 200 people under medical isolation and implemented district-wide quarantines after Shipilova travelled following her initial exposure.
  • Former White House COVID-19 coordinator Dr Deborah Birx raised concerns over potential droplet transmission, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for transparency from Moscow.
  • Local officials reported that all close contacts remain asymptomatic and have tested negative, though Russian public health agencies have not officially confirmed the plague diagnosis.
