Senior local Tory loses seat after meeting with ultra-Unionist group revealed

A TORY councillor who met with ultra-Unionist campaigners has lost his seat in a devastating result for the long-serving representative.

Euan Blockley held a senior position within the Glasgow Tory group as deputy leader but is no longer a councillor after losing his seat to Labour.

The councillor for the Linn ward met with Malcolm Cunning, the Glasgow Labour leader who represents the same area and David Griffiths, from the arch-Unionist group The Majority last month, in what was dubbed an “unholy alliance” by Tommy Sheppard.

Blockley held the seat since 2017 and was the first Tory to represent the area in the southside of Glasgow since its creation.

Conceding defeat, Blockley said: “It’s been the privilege of my life to have served the people of Linn Ward these past five years.

“It’s often been a rollercoaster of emotions, and the steepest of learning curves, but the experience of representing Linn in the city chambers is unmatched.”

He congratulated the other successful candidates in the area and praised the work of local community groups adding: “Our city simply wouldn’t be the place it is without the graft of community activists.”

It is the second high profile Tory defeat in the city on Friday after they lost a seat in the Pollokshields area, which had been represented by David Meikle – husband of ex-SNP MP Natalie McGarry – who has represented the area since 2007.

Local elected Malcolm Cunning and Cate Vallis for Labour and Paul McCabe and Margaret Morgan elected for the SNP to represent the area.
