Senegal v Egypt live: Mane strikes late in Afcon semi-final to deal Salah more heartbreak

Sadio Mane’s late goal sent Senegal through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations with a deserved victory over Egypt, as Mohamed Salah’s latest bid for a first trophy with his country ended in more heartbreak at the hands of his former Liverpool team-mate.

Mane’s 79th minute winner, fired low into the net from 20 yards, means Senegal will bid for a second Africa Cup of Nations title in three tournaments against hosts Morocco, who defeated Nigeria on penalties in the second semi-final.

Senegal, champions in 2021, had the vast majority of possession and chances in a tight, often heated, semi-final. Egypt had just two shots in the entire match as they paid the price for an overly defensive approach.

Mane, meanwhile, was Senegal’s hero against Egypt once again. He scored the winning penalty in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final against Egypt, and also scored the winning penalty in the 2022 World Cup play-offs, which also came against Salah’s side.

Senegal into the Afcon final

19:45 , Flo Clifford

This will be Senegal’s fourth Afcon final.

They lost in the showpiece in 2002 and 2019, to Cameroon and Algeria respectively, before beating Egypt on penalties in 2021.

Up next: Nigeria v Morocco

19:40 , Flo Clifford

Senegal will find out their opponents very shortly as Nigeria face Morocco in the other semi-final.

Kick-off is at 8pm GMT and it’s live on E4, and you can follow all the action with our liveblog here:

Nigeria v Morocco live: Afcon 2025 latest score and semi-final updates

Sadio Mane is Senegal's hero again

19:36 , Flo Clifford

Sadio Mane has been directly involved in more Afcon goals than anyone since he made his debut in the 2010 edition.

He is also the first player to reach 20 goal involvement at Afcon: 11 goals and nine assists.

That also moves him level with Salah on 11 Afcon goals.

Senegal to face Morocco or Nigeria

19:31 , Flo Clifford

The cameras now pan to Morocco and Nigeria as they arrive for the second of these semi-finals. Very different vibes: the host nation look tense, while the Super Eagles are jamming out to some tunes blared on a speaker.

Salah's wait for Afcon title goes on

19:25 , Flo Clifford

Salah’s wait for an Afcon title continues. This is now the fifth straight time Egypt have been beaten in the knockout stages. How many more chances will he get?

Senegal into the Afcon final

19:19 , Flo Clifford

The way Hossam Hassan has set his side up has come in for criticism and that will only increase now. It was an incredibly defensive set-up, which would maybe have been more palatable if they actually offered anything on the counter... but they didn’t.

It took until the 84th minute for them to win a corner, and Hassan’s decision to bring on an extra three strikers late on wasn’t enough.

It looked like their tactic was to drag things out until penalties from the get-go, and it backfired spectacularly.

Senegal into the Afcon final

19:14 , Flo Clifford

They replay the goal now; Camara’s strike ricocheted off the defenders and it took a moment of magic for Mane to run onto it before Egypt could regroup, blasting into the back of the net.

Earlier in the move there was a shout for offside on Jackson, who cut it back from the byline, but replays show it would have been only by millimetres at most and rather harsh.

Senegal into the Afcon final

19:04 , Flo Clifford

Interesting from Mane at the end, not much celebrating, instead gesturing for his teammates to remain calm, as if to say ‘it’s not over yet’. And of course, there is a final to win.

Dismay writ large on the Egypt players’ faces but Salah took it on the chin; it looked like he knew they didn’t turn up tonight.

Senegal into the Afcon final

19:01 , Flo Clifford

Senegal are into their third final in the last four editions of Afcon.

They’ll be heading to Rabat, to face either Nigeria or Morocco.

Could the 2021 champions do it again?

Senegal into the Afcon final

19:00 , Flo Clifford

Heartbreak for Egypt, but they were second-best for all but the final five minutes, really. In fact, Senegal were the only team to really turn up.

Sadio Mane’s superb 78th-minute strike is the difference.

FULL-TIME! Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:58 , Flo Clifford

Ibrahim’s throw-in is headed clear in the box - and it’s full-time!

Salah’s wait for an Afcon title goes on, and Senegal are into the final thanks to Sadio Mane!

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:57 , Flo Clifford

‘90+5: Long to Mohsen, Senegal hoof it clear... and again... Mohsen goes down but no free-kick.

That’s all five minutes of added time gone...

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:56 , Flo Clifford

‘90+5: Another long ball by Egypt... Marmoush hits it with venom but straight at Mendy.

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:56 , Flo Clifford

‘90+4: Egypt come again but Senegal nick possession and counter... but Mane gives it up.

Mohsen comes on for Fathy. Another attacking change. Kitchen sink, etc.

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:55 , Flo Clifford

‘90+3: Much better ball into the box for Egypt; it’s recycled and Mendy collects, and has a little lie-down to run down the clock.

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:53 , Flo Clifford

‘90+2: Ciss is on for Gueye, for what Senegal hope are the final few minutes.

Five minutes added on.

A couple of Egypt’s bench have their heads in their hands.

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:53 , Flo Clifford

‘90: Senegal make a hash of defending as Egypt push and Mendy fails to properly gather, but with the ball still alive the whistle eventually goes and that’s a major let-off for them.

The roles have reversed now, with Senegal defending for their lives.

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:51 , Flo Clifford

‘89: Trezeguet finds space down the left, takes a lovely touch and cuts inside, but Senegal get bodies back and Diatta slams the door shut on that one.

Egypt recycle, Diatta volleys away again.

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:50 , Flo Clifford

‘88: The crowd have something to shout about now after that goal as Egypt finally bring something to the party. They’re pushing forward but time is running out...

Abdelmaguid wins the best acting award after he goes down in apparent agony from a very gentle push.

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:47 , Flo Clifford

‘85: Changes for Senegal now: Iliman Ndiaye and Jackson are off, Ismaila Sarr and C. Ndiaye are on.

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:46 , Flo Clifford

‘84: Egypt have no choice but to venture forwrd now, and they win their first corner of the game. Zizo delivers towards the back post... Mohamed sends it over the bar.

(AP)

Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:45 , Flo Clifford

‘83: Senegal want another, Camara just about gets a cross in from a very tight angle, but Pape Gueye slips and sends it well over the crossbar.

Zizo goes down in the box after some very gentle contact, which in fact started on the outside of the box, and doesn’t get the penalty. Good call.

Another attacking change for Egypt: Ashour is replaced by Mohamed.

GOAL! Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:43 , Flo Clifford

‘80: It looks like Jackson may have been fractionally offside, but VAR isn’t getting involved!

A Senegal attempt bounces off a defender and falls to Mane 20 yards out, and he blasts into the back of the net! A sweet, sweet strike into the bottom corner.

Egypt respond with an attacking change: Rabia is off, Zizo coming on.

GOAL! Senegal 1-0 Egypt

18:41 , Flo Clifford

’78: Senegal get the breakthrough, and it’s through Sadio Mane!

The Teranga Lions finally break down Egypt’s defence. Is Jackson offside in the build-up, though?

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:36 , Flo Clifford

‘74: Senegal have had nearly 70 percent possession, they’re just not being allowed to do anything with it.

Egypt win a throw-in deep inside their own half. Now Rabia hooks clear a Camara cross and it’s time for another Senegal corner. Time for some more squabbling in the box? No, Diouf is allowed to take it without too much delay.

It bounces around, Senegal recycle, and Ndiaye can’t really get a good connection on it.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:33 , Flo Clifford

‘71:Ndiaye manages to get the cross in right before being smothered at the byline by Hany... but Egypt’s defence scramble it clear.

Now they break... don’t get too excited, Niakhate wins it back.

(REUTERS)

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:30 , Flo Clifford

‘68: Ashour bundles over Diatta and both hit the deck, but Ashour helps him up and no fracas there.

Ndiaye tries to find room for a cross... Fathy drives him backwards. Not entirely sure what Egypt’s plan is to win this game, to be honest.

Marmoush goes down incredibly easily and wastes some more time.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:26 , Flo Clifford

‘64: The overwhelmingly pro-Senegal crowd cheer a strong challenge by Diatta on Salah, who has a rare touch of the ball.

Salah incidentally needs just one more goal to equal the Egyptian record at this competition - he’s on 11. It doesn’t look like he’ll get it tonight, mind, but still time for things to change...

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:24 , Flo Clifford

‘62: As you were. Six shots for Senegal so far, nil for Egypt.

The Teranga Lions win another free-kick as Fathy pulls Pape Gueye’s shirt.

It’s 30 yards out or so... it’s lifted into a good spot but the keeper runs out to collect.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:22 , Flo Clifford

‘60: Senegal win another corner. Trezeguet shoves Pape Gueye in the box as they prepare to take it, and once again the referee comes over to restore order, albeit belatedly.

Diouf’s corner bounces off an Egyptian head, it’s eventually cleared and Egypt break, but Ashour loses possession cheaply and Diatta clears the danger. Marmoush berates his teammate for that.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:19 , Flo Clifford

‘57: Mane puts on a burst of speed down the left channel and gets the better of Hany this time... another Senegal corner.

Not before the referee has to give Jackson a telling-off in the box, though.

The corner is played short... Camara has a shot from a long way out but El Shenawy collects easily. At least it was on target?

(AP)

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:17 , Flo Clifford

‘55: Diatta curls in a cross down the right again but only finds a red shirt. Senegal are probing, but Camara slips on the edge of the box and Egypt scramble it clear.

Senegal are desperately trying to up the tempo here but Egypt are doing their best to kill it off entirely.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:14 , Flo Clifford

‘52: Pape Gueye runs onto a long ball which looks promising but Abdelmaguid clears it behind for a corner.

Diouf swings it in... Ashour heads it away at the near post. Another poor delivery.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:10 , Flo Clifford

‘48: Another cagey start to this half. Is it too early to start talking about penalties?

SECOND HALF: Senegal 0-0 Egypt

18:07 , Flo Clifford

Both sides make a half-time substitution: Trezeguet comes on for Fotouh, while Camara comes on for Diarra, who was on a yellow.

HALF-TIME: Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:56 , Flo Clifford

If you’re just tuning in now, you haven’t missed much... barely any chances in that half but a lot of fouls, breaks in play for injury, and low-quality set-pieces.

Senegal were unlucky to lose Koulibaly to injury but the captain had already picked up a yellow and would miss the final anyway through suspension, should they get there.

The most exciting thing in that half was a bit of a fracas among the technical staff after a fairly innocuous foul by Salah on Mane. Not the most edifying of scenes.

(REUTERS)

HALF-TIME: Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:50 , Flo Clifford

‘45+5: Rabia sticks to Jackson like glue; it looks to me like he kicked the ball out but Egypt have a goal kick.

Senegal turn it over quickly, Diarra’s attempted cross is turned behind for a corner... but the referee blows his whistle for half-time before they can take it. They just dallied too long. More protests from the Teranga Lions.

That’s it for a rather scrappy half.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:48 , Flo Clifford

‘45+2: Salah lofts in the set-piece... it goes all the way through and out for a goal kick as Yasser Ibrahim gets nothing on it. The Senegal defenders essentially stand there and watch it go looping over them, but they get away with it regardless.

Hossam Hassan has his head in his hands.

Diarra pushes over Fathy, another daft foul.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:46 , Flo Clifford

‘45: Egypt win a free-kick deep on the right as Diouf bundles over Salah.

Four minutes added on.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:43 , Flo Clifford

‘43: Diarra has gone into the book for that particular protest... and he will miss the final too if Senegal make it! It’s getting a bit ridiculous now.

Now both bosses are in heated conversation with the referee... a fair bit of added time to this half, I suspect.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:41 , Flo Clifford

‘41: Salah trips old Liverpool teammate Mane near the technical areas and protests his innocence; the Egypt players immediately surround the ref again, and the coaching staff get in a bit of a ruckus too!

Boos ring out at the melee. Senegal boss Pape Thiaw urges everyone to calm down a bit. What a mess...

(AP)

SAVE!

17:39 , Flo Clifford

‘39: Great cross in from Diouf, with Jackson waiting in the box, but another last-ditch Egypt clearance comes to the rescue!

Diouf gestures to the crowd to make some noise as Senegal prepare to take the corner... but it’s cleared. Senegal are just being frustrated here.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:37 , Flo Clifford

‘37: Egypt are furious as Senegal win a free-kick after Fathy wins the ball but leaves his studs on Diarra, over the top of the ball. It’s perhaps a harsh call.

The volume goes up a notch as Ndiaye darts down the right flank, but has to cut back as Egypt crowd out the box. The Pharaohs have largely been camped out in their half.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:35 , Flo Clifford

‘35: Mane grimaces as his cross takes a deflection before he can find Jackson in the centre of the box, and El Shenawy falls onto it gratefully.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:33 , Flo Clifford

‘32: Pape Gueye now has a go... that’s nowhere near troubling the keeper either. Four shots now for Senegal, who are starting to build something. Egypt are yet to have a shot.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:32 , Flo Clifford

‘31: Diarra lets fly an attempt from range; it takes a deflection off Fathy’s outstretched boot and El Shenawy isn’t too troubled by it.

It’s the first time either keeper has been called into making a save so far.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:29 , Flo Clifford

‘29: It’s been largely Senegal so far but now Egypt break. Hamdy receives the ball down the right flank... Diouf appeals for offside and the referee obliges.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:27 , Flo Clifford

‘25: So that is Koulibaly’s tournament over, sadly.

Gueye wins possession back deep in Egypt’s half and Ndiaye is released, powering away down the field... Diouf lofts in a cross but it’s cut out before reaching Mane.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:24 , Flo Clifford

‘23: Oh, this is not good. The stretcher is out for Koulibaly.... but he’s walking off on his own. Huge blow for Senegal, losing their captain so early on.

Mamadou Sarr is on in his place.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:21 , Flo Clifford

‘21: Another break in play as Senegal’s captain Koulibaly goes to ground with what looks like a groin injury. He’s surrounded by his teammates, who look concerned, and the medical staff come on.

He appears to have pulled something in a rather innocuous movement, just changing direction.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:19 , Flo Clifford

‘19: The free-kick is in a decent position but Marmoush’s delivery is poor.

No shots on goal so far... but the ball breaks for Jackson, but he blasts a powerful attempt over the bar, appearing to lose his balance.

(REUTERS)

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:17 , Flo Clifford

‘17: And everyone surrounds the referee to protest.

Both Abdelmaguid and Koulibaly will miss the next match if their side make the final, in a major blow to both.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:17 , Flo Clifford

‘17: Salah goes for a theatrical fall after a mild challenge from Gueye, but fails to win the foul.

A slightly scrappy element to this game so far.

Jackson and Abdelmaguid clash as the Bayern Munich striker turns onto a pass, no one in the wrong there but another break in play... and now Koulibaly goes into the book for clipping Marmoush with the Egyptian through on goal.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:12 , Flo Clifford

‘11: Boos from the sizeable Senegalese contingent as Egypt enjoy a spell of possession.

Diouf has taken a hit in the unmentionables attempting to block a cross, and he’s down on the ground in some pain. The Egypt fans enjoyed that, at any rate.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:10 , Flo Clifford

‘9: The referee has quite the game on his hands: two attempts to take the corner have to be retaken for pushing and shoving in the box. Once it’s eventually taken Ashour heads away and Diarra blasts a shot miles over the bar.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:07 , Flo Clifford

‘7: Abdelmaguid is first into the book and it’s very early! And rather soft, too, for a shirt-pull. Egypt’s players surround the ref in protest.

Senegal have a free-kick... Yasser Ibrahim heads it behind for a Senegal corner.

Egypt's Mohamed Salah reacts with Senegal's Sadio Mane before the match (REUTERS)

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:05 , Flo Clifford

‘5: The flag goes up for offside against Mane. So far Egypt have taken a very defensive formation, with Senegal pressing high.

Brief break in play as Ashour goes down after an aerial duel with Idrissa Gueye.

Senegal 0-0 Egypt

17:04 , Flo Clifford

‘2: Senegal get us underway and Mane immediately goes for a break down the left, but Abdelmaguid sticks doggedly to his man.

Salah & Mane renew rivalry

16:30 , Chris Wilson

Mo Salah and Sadio Mane emerged as two of Africa’s best ever players from the beginning of their productive spells together at Liverpool, and the duo face off again this evening in a match that could define both of their legacies on the continent.

Salah could well lay claim to being the best player to come out of the continent – though Samuel Eto’o would likely have something to say about that – and while his exploits at club level speak for themselves, some on the continent might contest that a player cannot lay claim to be the greatest without an Afcon title to their name.

Salah has famously lost two Afcon finals too, in 2017 and 2021, and at the age of 33 this could be his last chance to win the tournament.

And while Mane will want to take part in another final, he has no such worries about his own legacy, having scored the winning spot kick in the 2021 final between these two nations.

Mane called that final win “the best day of my life”, while Salah recently remarked that “nobody, even in Egypt, wants to win this trophy more than me”.

Team news

The line-ups will be released at some point over the next 10 minutes, so here’s a reminder of the early team news...

Senegal have a fully fit squad to lean on so will look to captain Sadio Mane for inspiration, who has registered three assists for the Teranga Lions this campaign. Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye scored the opener in their semi-final triumph and will also be a major threat, while Nicolas Jackson will be vying to start.

Egypt will once again plead that Salah puts in a hero’s performances as the Pharaohs hope to keep hopes of a first Afcon title since 2010 alive. Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush will also be a major threat, on a high off his goal against Ivory Coast. However, defender Mohamed Hamdi is still not be available due to a knee injury.

Here’s a brief recap of Senegal’s quarter-final win...

Senegal secured their place in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, with Iliman Ndiaye’s solitary strike proving decisive.

The forward capitalised on a spill from Mali’s goalkeeper in the first half, converting what appeared to be one of the easiest goals of his career.

The Teranga Lions’ task was made simpler by the sending off of Yves Bissouma, which handed them a numerical advantage for the entire second period.

Despite failing to extend their lead and missing several opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, Senegal held their nerve to overcome their opponents, moving a step closer to the elusive African crown.

Mohamed Salah will hope to inspire more Africa Cup of Nations magic as his Egypt side take on Senegal for a place in the tournament’s final.

The Pharaohs sent defending champions Ivory Coast packing in the quarter-finals, with Salah getting on the scoring again as his goal proved decisive in a five-goal thriller in Agadir.

They take on the Teranga Lions, who arguably had the easiest quarter-final assignment of the eight as they dispatched Mali in convincing fashion.

The winner of the tie will set up a finale clash with either host nation Morocco or free-scoring Nigeria in Sunday’s final in Rabat.
