Photographers in the region are being asked to help a drive to boost the region’s tourism economy – and get their picture on the front of The Journal.
The Journal and Chroniclelive are working with NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI) on a competition to find the best images from the region. The competition to find pictures that best sell the North East to visitors comes during English Tourism Week, which aims to celebrate the country’s tourism sector.
Pre-Covid, the North East visitor economy contributed £5.2bn to the region’s economy but the region still receives the lowest number of visitors and the lowest amount of visitor spend of any region in England. There are hopes that the region’s visitor economy could be grown and last year the Government selected the North East to pilot a new tourism scheme which will see NGI work with Visit Northumberland, Visit County Durham and all seven local authorities to develop the region as a must-visit destination, attracting more visitors, creating new experiences, targeting new markets and creating jobs and opportunity.

In the last 20 years, the North East visitor economy has doubled in size and NGI now has ambitions to do the same in just 10 years, supporting the provision of more than 25,000 jobs.
Photographs can be taken anywhere in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, or County Durham. The winning photo will be published on the front cover of The Journal, with two other winners also being published online. The overall winner and two runners up will also get to pick an experience from the New Adventures website (https://newadventures.org.uk) up to a value of £100.
