A Senate bill introduced in late July would require a single standard nutrition label on the front of food packages and, for the first time in federal law, define what counts as an ultraprocessed food.
The Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2026 was introduced by Senators Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Cory Booker of New Jersey as the companion to a House bill filed in April by Representatives Frank Pallone Jr. and Rosa DeLauro. It has been introduced only. No committee vote has been held, and the measure was first introduced in 2013 and has been reintroduced several times without becoming law.
