Senator Gillibrand Advocates For 9/11 First Responders' Health Funding

First responders gather near the site where a building collapsed, following an earthquake, in Hualien

As the nation commemorates the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th attacks, a somber milestone has been reached in New York. It has been reported that more members of the New York City Fire Department have succumbed to illnesses linked to the attacks than those who perished on that fateful day.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, who has been a staunch advocate for legislation to support the surviving first responders, expressed her shock at this revelation. She highlighted the devastating impact of the toxic substances released during the collapse of the Twin Towers, leading to a range of cancers among the brave men and women who rushed into the buildings while others were evacuating.

Gillibrand emphasized the urgent need for adequate healthcare resources and compensation for these heroes, noting that over the past two decades, efforts have been ongoing to secure the necessary funding. She pointed out that there is still approximately $3 billion required to address the escalating healthcare costs due to inflation.

The Senator underscored the importance of bipartisan support for initiatives like the 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act, which aims to rectify the funding shortfall and ensure that the healthcare needs of the first responders are met.

Gillibrand expressed optimism that unity can be restored in Congress to pass the necessary legislation, citing previous instances where funding was approved unanimously. She stressed the significance of reminding lawmakers and the public of the sacrifices made by the first responders on 9/11 and the ongoing struggles they face in accessing essential care.

She recounted the poignant scenes of first responders deteriorating over time as they fought for the healthcare they deserved, underscoring the heartbreaking reality of their plight. Gillibrand's call for bipartisan and bicameral support to address the healthcare needs of 9/11 responders resonates as a crucial step towards honoring their bravery and sacrifice.
