Senate Panel Considers Boosting Secret Service Budget For Inauguration

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol gives speech on government budget

Sen. Chris Murphy, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, has urged the US Secret Service to explore innovative solutions to enhance security measures leading up to the presidential inauguration in January. The committee is currently in discussions with the Biden administration regarding potential funding increases for the Secret Service in the upcoming government funding bill.

Murphy emphasized the importance of addressing the agency's resource needs promptly, stating that additional funding, potentially amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars, could be allocated to bolster the Secret Service's budget. Alternatively, provisions may be included to expedite the utilization of existing funds to support heightened security measures.

One proposed strategy involves considering additional overtime expenses and exploring collaborative opportunities with other government agencies. The integration of advanced technologies, such as drones, has also been suggested as a viable means to enhance security protocols in the interim period.

While Murphy indicated that it may not be imperative to include supplementary funding in the imminent bill, he underscored the possibility of granting the Secret Service the flexibility to accelerate spending in the lead-up to the inauguration.

The urgency for enhanced security measures has been underscored by recent incidents, including a second apparent assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump. President Joe Biden acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by the Secret Service, emphasizing the need for additional support to ensure the safety of all individuals under their protection.
