Senate Committee Launches Investigation Into Attempted Assassination Of Trump

Gary Peters

The Senate Homeland Security Committee, led by Chair Gary Peters, has announced a bipartisan investigation into the recent attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The committee aims to expedite the process and hold hearings before the Senate recesses for August.

Chair Peters stated that the investigation will focus on examining the events surrounding the attempted assassination and identifying any security breaches that need to be addressed. The committee is currently seeking detailed briefings for its members and plans to schedule a hearing promptly.

Peters highlighted that the committee will draw from its previous investigation into the security failures on January 6, 2021, as a template for this new effort. He noted that many of the recommendations from the January 6 assessment have already been implemented to enhance security practices at the Capitol.

The committee has been in communication with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and is expecting briefings from the FBI. While Peters has not yet spoken with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, he anticipates setting up a briefing for the full Homeland Security committee in the near future.

The bipartisan nature of the investigation underscores the committee's commitment to thoroughly examining the incident and ensuring the safety and security of current and former government officials. Stay tuned for further updates as the investigation progresses.
