Senate votes to avoid government shutdown as 10 Democrats vote with Republicans

The Senate voted overwhelmingly to avert a government shutdown after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and a handful of Democrats broke from the majority of their party to vote with Republicans on a spending bill.

All but one Republican senator, Rand Paul of Kentucky, voted for the bill, along with 10 Democrats, voted to invoke cloture and therefore prevent a filibuster. That paved the way for the final passage of the bill that will now head to President Donald Trump’s desk.
