Outgoing Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, recently shared his thoughts on the future of the GOP and the political landscape in the United States. Romney expressed his belief that Vice President-elect JD Vance could potentially be the Republican Party's presidential nominee in 2028, praising Vance as 'smart' and 'well-spoken'.
Reflecting on the 2024 presidential election, Romney highlighted that President-elect Donald Trump selected Vance as his running mate, leading to a successful campaign against the Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
Romney credited Trump for reshaping the GOP into a party that appeals to working-class and middle-class voters. He suggested that movements such as defunding the police and transgender athlete policies have caused some middle-class individuals to shift their allegiance from the Democratic Party to the GOP.
During the interview, Romney expressed his view that the Democratic Party is facing challenges, with a loss of support from union workers and a perception of being associated with affluent individuals and academia.
When asked about concerns regarding potential retribution from Trump against political opponents, Romney indicated that he is not worried and believes Trump will focus on the future rather than seeking retribution.
Romney, who has served as a senator since 2019, decided not to seek re-election. He previously ran as the GOP's presidential nominee in 2012, ultimately losing to incumbent Democratic President Barack Obama. Romney also has a background as the former governor of Massachusetts.
When questioned about his legacy, Romney humbly stated that he does not expect to be remembered by history, emphasizing that his priority is to be remembered by his family.
