Selma Blair does the splits amid MS battle as Sarah Michelle Gellar watches on in tears

Selma Blair performed an inspiring routine on Monday's Dancing with the Stars as she did a cartwheel and the splits amid her battle with multiple sclerosis.

The actress, 50, danced an energetic jive to Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock alongside professional dance partner Sasha Farber. The performance was the most emotional moment of the night, bringing the crowd to its feet.

Selma's best friend and former co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar watched on as part of the audience and was reduced to tears as Selma dazzled on the dancefloor.

Following the performance, the 45-year-old Buffy the Vampire Slayer star took to Instagram to gush over the moving routine.

Sarah shared a series of behind-the-scenes snaps as she posed next to her pal and wrote: "I was 'All Shook Up' getting to watch my @selmablair live on @dancingwiththestars.

"@sashafarber1 thank you for all the joy and confidence you have given Blair."

The judges were also taken aback by Selma's performance and had nothing but praise for the star.

"There’s no other way to say it except you make it look so much easier than it must be for you. That is such an amazing feat," said judge Carrie Ann Inaba.

Speaking after the show, Selma said: "It’s been amazing. I haven’t been able to invert for years. I used to be a gymnast when I was little … little little, 50 years ago!

"It was amazing to at least start to really play and just really have the best time. I just loved it."

Selma, who is well-known for her role in Cruel Intentions, was diagnosed with the degenerative condition multiple sclerosis in 2018. It affects her balance and motor skills as well as her memory.

During rehearsals for Dancing with the Stars, she said: "My body can freeze up at any moment. And I really hope it doesn't happen on the live show."

In August last year, after receiving stem cell treatment, Selma revealed that she was currently in remission.

MS sufferers who undergo treatment will go through periods of relapses and remissions.

The actress has been dealing with debilitating symptoms from the disease, including difficulty in speaking, and losing the ability to use her left leg fully, resulting in her using a cane to walk.

In her recent documentary which focuses on her struggles, Selma said an MS diagnosis can be "isolating" but was determined to get through it for her son Arthur.

"I was so burnt out. If there was an option to halt me, to rebalance after being hit so hard with that last flare, it's absolutely for my son.

"I have no desire to leave him alone right now."
