Selena Gomez says Justin Bieber split 'needed to happen' but admits he 'broke her heart'

Pop sensation Selena Gomez claims her break up with Justin Bieber back in 2018 was the 'best thing that ever happened to her'.

In her latest documentary 'My Mind And Me', the star reveals raw and emotional moments which she admits 'broke her heart'.

The 30-year-old Wolves hitmaker, dated Justin, 28, on-off for eight years but claims the break-up allowed her to learn to "choose herself and choose life again."

It inspired her 2020 hit song Lose You to Love Me, which she wrote in just 45 minutes.

Selena said: "Everything was so public. I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just moved past it, and I wasn't afraid anymore.

"I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of the hand, it was really confusing.

"But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me."

She added: 'It's about more than a lost love. It’s me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too.

"'The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are just to rediscover yourself again. "

has had a meteoric rise to fame from Disney child star to chart topping singer.

The film documents Selena's journey across six years, as she rose to fame, and moments in the documentary were described as being "uniquely raw and intimate".

The film, available on Apple TV+, is expected to open up conversations around mental health and loneliness.

Apple TV+ describes the new film as "After years in the limelight, Selena Gomez achieves unimaginable stardom.

"But just as she reaches a new peak, an unexpected turn pulls her into darkness.

"This uniquely raw and intimate documentary spans her six-year journey into a new light."

Speaking at the premiere of the film, she told US publication Variety: "Being able to see that version of myself and watching that back broke my heart, to know that I was ever that girl.

"I just wish I could have hugged that version of myself but I feel like it was important to share it because I did want people to start talking about this.

"Hopefully, after the pandemic if people are feeling these lonely feelings and not understanding, I just hope it opens people up."

She added: "I think by me being more transparent and honest about what I walked through, there’s nothing that they can say that will honestly affect me,” she told Variety.

"I am who I am and everyone is about to see it."

The star also gushed about the biography film on her social media. She said: "My Mind And Me. We don’t get along sometimes and it gets hard to breathe… But I wouldn’t change my life."

As well as building a name for herself in the acting industry, Selena is also an established singer who has sold more than 210 million singles worldwide and amassed over 45 billion global streams of her music.

Outside of her singing and acting accolades, the 30 year old star is known for her previous relationship with music star Justin Bieber. The pair dated for eight years in an on and off again relationship, before finally parting ways in 2018.

Justin has since married supermodel Hailey Baldwin, and was forced to dispel rumours that she 'stole' Justin from Selena with their relationship beginning closely after Selena and Justin split.

Speaking in an interview, Hailey explained: "It's not my character to mess with someone's relationship, I would just never do that, I was raised better than that. I'm not interested in doing that and I never was."

She added: "[Selena] doesn’t owe me anything, neither of us owe each other anything except respect. I respect her a lot. I respect her, there's no drama personally."

Selena has also struck out at 'vile trolls' who continued the narrative that there's bad blood between her and Hailey. Speaking on TikTok, she said: "I think some of the things that I don't even need to be aware of are just vile and disgusting.

"And it's not fair and no one ever should be spoken to in the manner that I've seen.

"All I have to say is it's incredibly ironic that I would release something that is all about kind words 'cause that's exactly what I want. That's it.

"If you support Rare, I cannot thank you enough, but know that you are also representing what it means and that is words matter. Truly matter."

Selena finished the video by saying: "I just want all of you to know that I hope that you understand that this is much bigger than anything else."

My Mind And Me is scheduled for release on November 4.
