DALLAS — They grew up about 20 minutes away from each other in North Texas, and now they’ll be headliners on Saturday Night Live on May 14.
Selena Gomez, who spent her childhood in Grand Prairie, will be the host in Studio 8H. Her musical guest will be Post Malone, who spent his formative years in Grapevine.
NBC announced their appearances for the penultimate show of season 47 on Friday. Gomez, 29, has performed on the show before, but it’s her first time hosting. For Malone, 26, who just learned he’ll be a dad, it’s his debut.
Gomez is starring in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, which also stars Martin Short and Steve Martin, who both have connections to SNL. Short is a former cast member and Martin has made 15 appearances on the show, which earned him an honorary SNL smoking jacket. Only Murders in the Building starts its second season on June 28.
Gomez, whose mom is former stage actress Mandy Teefey, made sure she was mentioned in an Instagram post, which was liked by more than a million of her followers.
“Mom...I think I’ve made it ... so grateful and so excited. See you May 14!!!”
Malone, whose real name is Austin Post, found out this week that he and his girlfriend are expecting their first child.
Malone’s appearance is likely timed to the June 3 debut of the Grammy-nominated rapper’s new album, Twelve Caret Toothache.
Has SNL had a Texas host-musical guest connection before? Yes, indeed. The show kicked off its 47th season last October with Dallas-native Owen Wilson hosting and East Texan Kacey Musgraves the musical guest.
In 1976, Waco-born Steve Martin also appeared alongside Kinky Friedman, who ran for Texas governor in 2006. If host/musical guest as the same person counts, Willie Nelson did it in 1987.
