Selena Gomez has addressed the online hate following Hailey Bieber's viral podcast interview.
On Wednesday (September 28), Bieber chatted on the Call Her Daddy podcast about a range of things, including her sex life with her husband, Gomez's ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, and whether he cheated on Gomez with her.
The model also questioned why Gomez has not asked her fans to stop leveling hate at her online for marrying Bieber.
On Thursday, Gomez didn’t address Bieber directly but said in a TikTok Live video clip: “It’s incredibly ironic that I would release something that’s all about kind words ’cause that’s exactly what I want.”
The Rare Beauty founder added: “I think some of the things that I don’t even need to be aware of are just vile and disgusting. And it’s not fair because no-one ever should be spoken to in the manner that I’ve seen.
“If you support Rare, I cannot thank you enough. But know that you are also representing what it means, and that is: Words matter, truly matter.”
The 30-year-old also pointed out that the hateful speech isn't coming from her and reminded her fans and followers that she uses “kind” words, and that they should, too.
Gomez, 30, concluded her message by wishing her fans a “wonderful rest of your day”.
On Wednesday's podcast, Bieber also got candid about the bullying she's faced from fans of both her husband and Gomez over allegations that she had come between them and their eight-year on-again-off-again relationship.
The 25-year-old model also revealed that she and Gomez have spoken since she married Justin in 2018.
“That's why I'm like, it's all respect. It's all love,” she said on the podcast.
“That's also why I feel like, if everybody on our side knows what happened and we're good and we could walk away from it with clarity and respect, then, like, that's fine.”
Despite this, she said that she has found herself targeted endlessly by trolls online and admitted to getting in a “really dark” place as a result and “having thoughts of, like, it not being worth it any more or not wanting to be here any more”.
Asked whether she or her pop star husband have ever approached Gomez to ask her fans to stop the social-media attacks, she said they have not.
“What I will say is, that she has been in this industry much longer than I have,” she explained. “Maybe there's something she knows about, like, it wouldn’t fix anything.”
However, she insisted that the online hate has not defeated her.
“They've never ruined anything for me,” she said of the trolls.
“They're not ruining my life, they’re not ruining my happiness and that, I think, is the real win of the whole thing. You’re actually not taking anything away from me.
“So that’s what I keep stepping forward with.”
