Seeing Final Fantasy Resonance bring turn-based combat back to the Final Fantasy franchise brings a tear to my eye as a longtime fan

Pixel art scene of five fantasy warriors in vibrant outfits and armor standing ready in a mystical forest, flanked by stone statues and an ethereal blue portal.

One of the biggest surprises for me during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct was the reveal of a new Final Fantasy called Final Fantasy Resonance.

This is the first game in the series to adopt an HD-2D pixel art style seen in other modern Square Enix titles like Octopath Traveller, Live a Live, and Dragon Quest's HD-2D Remakes, and it plans to bring back an important feature Final Fantasy has been lacking for decades – turn-based combat.
