'Secure' My Health app brings records to mobile devices

Digital health record information will now be accessible on a new mobile app.

Information such as pathology results, vaccine histories and hospital discharge summaries will be available through the My Health app, being rolled out by the Australian Digital Health Agency.

The app's launch follows an almost 300 per cent increase during the last financial year in people viewing My Health Record data.

The agency's chief executive Amanda Cattermole said the app would be easy to use but also keep the information secure.

"One of the things we have learned from the surge in use of My Health Record is that around 75 per cent of interactions between the system and users occurred on mobile devices," she said.

"The release of a consumer-facing app is not only a logical technical development but also a direct response to consumer demand for access to health information when and where they need it."

The app will allow people to view multiple records, including records for children under 14.

The launch comes despite the My Health Record system being found in 2019 to have failed to manage cyber security risks.

A national audit office review found while at the time the system was "largely effective", there was no guarantee that all emergency access requests to view health records were legitimate.

It was revealed in 2020 the online health records were targeted by hackers, but no personal information was taken.

Ms Cattermole assured that data stored on the app would remain safe.
