Secretary of State Antony Blinken is embarking on a diplomatic mission to Jordan and Turkey this week to address the evolving situation in Syria following the collapse of the Assad regime. Blinken has outlined four key principles that the US expects a new Syrian government to adhere to: respecting the rights of minorities, facilitating humanitarian aid, preventing Syria from becoming a terrorist hub or posing threats to neighboring countries, and ensuring the secure destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles.
During his visit, Blinken will engage in discussions centered on these principles and show support for a transition to a Syrian government that is inclusive, accountable, and representative of the population. In Turkey, Blinken is expected to address the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army's attacks on the US-supported Kurds in northeast Syria.
Blinken's agenda also includes broader regional issues, such as advocating for a ceasefire and hostage resolution in Gaza. The US State Department has confirmed that the Secretary of State will commence his trip in Aqaba, Jordan, before proceeding to Ankara, Turkey.
