In a recent visit to Ukraine, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin emphasized the importance of Ukraine's efforts to defend itself against Russian President Vladimir Putin's ongoing assault. Austin acknowledged that there is no quick solution to end the conflict, stating that no single capability or system can halt Putin's aggression.
Austin commended the collaborative efforts of the U.S. and its allies in providing support to Ukraine and stressed that Ukraine's security is not only crucial for Europe but also for the United States.
During his visit, Austin announced an additional $400 million arms package for Ukraine, highlighting the significance of aiding Ukraine in its resistance against Putin's forces. He warned against the consequences of abandoning Ukraine, stating that the cost of retreat is far greater than the cost of standing firm against aggression.
Despite the prolonged conflict, Austin pointed out that Putin has not achieved his objectives in Ukraine, with significant casualties on the Russian side and a high number of civilian deaths in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Austin's visit and the defense package, emphasizing the need to strengthen defense capabilities and prepare for potential Russian assaults on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
While Zelenskyy has advocated for the use of long-range weapons against Russian military targets, the U.S. has been cautious about this approach. Austin reiterated the commitment to supporting Ukraine with necessary military aid to combat Russian forces.
Austin underscored the global solidarity in defending Ukraine's sovereignty, stating that nations worldwide have rallied to support Ukraine in its fight against aggression. He emphasized the role of the United States and its allies in assisting Ukraine as it defends its democracy against external threats.
