Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle announced on Monday that a comprehensive report detailing the recent events will be completed within the next 60 days. Cheatle emphasized the importance of accountability and promised that necessary changes would be implemented based on the findings of the report.
She mentioned that an internal investigation is currently underway to ensure mission assurance, with a target completion date of 60 days. Additionally, an external investigation and several Office of Inspector General inquiries are also in progress.
However, Cheatle's timeline for the report did not sit well with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who expressed concerns about the delay given the heightened threat environment in the United States. Ocasio-Cortez stressed the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that the safety of high-profile targets is paramount and should not be compromised.
Ocasio-Cortez criticized the notion of waiting 60 days for a finalized report before taking any actionable steps, stating that immediate policy decisions may be necessary to address the current challenges effectively. She underscored the need for transparency and swift action to ensure the security of individuals at risk.
Despite the timeline for the report, Cheatle clarified that she is not waiting for the investigations to conclude before implementing necessary changes. She acknowledged the importance of proactive measures to address security concerns promptly.
