A second sinkhole has opened up in a town centre just weeks after one initially appeared on a busy road. On Sunday, June 11, a sinkhole was reported on Lovers Lane, Newark, just a short distance away from the sinkhole first reported in April on the roundabout connecting the lane with Queens Road.
A stretch of Queen's Road has remained closed since Tuesday, April 18, with many drivers diverting down Lovers Lane in order to connect to North Gate. Newark and Sherwood District Councillor for the Bridge ward, Debbie Darby, stated: "It is worrying that yet another sink hole has appeared on Lovers Lane only a short walk away from the one on Queens road.
"It is unfortunate it is a slow process to get the sink holes made safe as multi agencies are having to work together, such as Via and Severn Trent, and they are dealing with an old Victorian Culvert so the repair work is brick by brick. We need to ensure the roads are made safe before any roads can reopen.

"On a good note works that was due to take place in the near future made sense to bring forward such as the fibre work for faster broadband and Gully cleansing. I understand its flustering for residents and nearby businesses but people’s safety is paramount."
A highways manager from Nottinghamshire County Council said: “A collapse in the carriageway on Lover’s Lane in Newark was reported last week. Barriers were installed by our Incident Response Team to make the area safe, and the road remains open.
“It is currently awaiting attendance from Severn Trent Water to investigate the cause, after which we should know a plan for repairs to be made.”
