Second of Bedminster's four closed pubs set to reopen

New owners have announced they plan to reopen another of the four pubs in Bedminster that closed suddenly last month, after the first successfully reopened at the weekend.

An announcement on the London Inn’s Facebook page confirmed plans to reopen this coming Friday, April 14, a couple of weeks since the sudden closure shocked the south Bristol community.

On March 29, the London Inn, Albert Lounge, Black Cat and Tap & Barrel - all pubs within a 200 yard radius at the heart of Bedminster - suddenly closed, when the licensee holder for all four pubs said she could no longer continue with rising prices and bills, and the cost-of-living crisis.

All four pubs are owned by the same person, who had been leasing all four out to the same businesswoman. Now, there are hopes each lease will be taken on individually - and that appears to be gradually happening.

Last week, Darren and Caroline Godfrey announced they had taken on the lease of the Black Cat in West Street, with local couple Mark and Katie Whiteman taking on the management of the pub. The pub reopened officially on Good Friday, April 7, and enjoyed a busy Easter weekend.

Now, the London Inn has announced it will open this Friday. A statement on the pub’s social media said: “Great news - we will be opening back up on Friday April 14. We will be having live singers on Fridays, karaoke on Saturday and Sundays and bingo on Tuesdays. We will also be doing quiz nights and barbecues. I hope you all get behind us and support us in this new venture. We hope to see a lot of locals and also new faces.”

From this weekend, only the Tap & Barrel and the Albert Lounge will remain closed, but there is hope. Bristol Live understands prospective new leaseholders have been shown around the Albert Lounge over the weekend, and the Tap & Barrel’s own Facebook page expressed hope that someone new would come in and take the pub on.
