Police Scotland is to enforce a new policy where all officers have to shave off beards and moustaches, according to the BBC. Four officers are reported to be taking legal action against the policy which comes into force by the end of this month.
Police Scotland said it was necessary so officers and staff could wear protective masks in a review following the Covid pandemic. The policy, which also covers civilian staff, has been approved by the chief constable.
Assistant Chief Constable Alan Speirs said in a message to staff: "The safety of our people remains a priority and it is clear that a single overarching policy on the use of protective masks is required."
There will be exemptions for religious, cultural, disability or medical reasons. Police Scotland is the UK's second biggest force.
The Scottish Police Federation said it had been inundated with complaints about the policy.
SPF general secretary David Kennedy said they are supporting several members who had lodged employment tribunal cases.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said the safety of officers and staff was a priority. She said: "We are consulting with staff associations and our diversity associations as we gather views from officers and staff ahead of implementing this vital policy to keep our people safe.
"Those consultations are ongoing."
