Second-hand shopper arrested over allegedly fake transfer receipts

A man has been arrested over the alleged production of fake transfer receipts to complete the purchase of second-hand items sold online.

According to territory police, fake electronic transactions were presented to buy items of value such as vehicles.

In some cases, the items were returned when the sellers did not receive the expected funds. Police are still investigating the man's allegedly fraudulent activities and no charges have been laid against him.

But as a result, Canberrans are being reminded to never hand over goods until payment is properly received.

"Never rely on images or copies of 'receipts' provided by the buyer. Banks cheques and cash can also be requested as suitable payment options," an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of a similar incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
