A search for a rock fisherman swept into waters north of Newcastle is entering its third day.

Three anglers were rescued and treated by paramedics off Fingal Bay at Port Stephens on Saturday morning.

The two men, aged 59 and 54, and a 47-year-old woman, all from Sydney, were taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

However a third man  in his 60s was not found.

An extensive search was initiated involving local and marine command police, the force's airwing, marine rescue and surf lifesavers before being suspended at 6pm on Saturday due to dangerous surf.

The multi-agency water and land-based operation continued without success on Sunday and was expected to resume about 8am on Monday.
