The search for a "missing" paraglider off the coast of Wollongong has been called off for safety reasons.
NSW Police said the search, which began yesterday, was aborted on Sunday "due to dangerous conditions" adding local water police will continue to monitor the situation.
No one has been reported missing and no further details have been made public.
A multi-agency search began at Woonona Beach, just north of Wollongong, around 2pm on Saturday following reports the paraglider had crashed into the water about 200m offshore.
At one point, rescue workers used a fluorescent green sea dye which tracks currents, to boost their search efforts to no avail.
The air, sea and land search was halted at 5pm and continued at 8am on Sunday before eventually being called off.
A severe weather alert was issued across the state, including in the Illawarra region, which saw wind gusts of up to 100km/hr overnight.
