Seaplane crashes near island in Sydney Harbour

A seaplane carrying eight people has crashed in Sydney Harbour after part of the aircraft fell off, but only one person sustained minor injuries.

Emergency crews were called to Shark Island, near Rose Bay in the eastern suburbs, about 11.45am on Thursday after reports a seaplane had crashed into the water.

There were eight people in the plane but only one required treatment for minor injuries when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Police were told one of the aircraft's pontoons, used during take off and landing, had been damaged and fallen off, causing the plane to crash.

Officers from Marine Area Command and eastern suburbs police are investigating the incident.

The extent of the damage to the plane is not known.
