The Seahawks were among the teams that called the Jets about wide receiver Denzel Mims, who recently requested a trade. According to Connor Hughes, the Vikings, Cowboys and Panthers also called. However, the Jets were asking for a fourth-round draft pick in return, which nobody was willing to give up, so they kept him.
Mims (6-foot-3, 207 pounds) was a second-round pick by New York in the 2020 draft after balling out at Baylor. So far he’s played in 20 games, totaling 31 catches, 490 yards and zero touchdowns.
This is a sign that the coaching staff is understandably not thrilled with their depth at wide receiver. During the preseason, DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett only played a handful of snaps. That allowed everyone else on the depth chart a chance to shine but none took advantage.
Seventh-round picks Dareke Young and Bo Melton both struggled with drops and Melton wound up on the practice squad after getting cut from the initial 53-man roster.
Among the candidates to be the WR3 option there wasn’t much to like. Dee Eskridge only played one game and is still showing signs of delayed development. Marquise Goodwin missed the preseason due to an injury and former No. 3 receiver Freddie Swain struggled so much that he was released.
That leaves a pretty significant opening for the Seahawks’ passing game. If they can find another quality receiver before Week 1 they should jump on it.
