'Screaming' and blood splattered in the street as neighbours wake up to yet another stabbing

Neighbours heard 'screaming' and woke up to blood-splattered vehicles after another stabbing on the streets of Greater Manchester. A boy and a girl, both aged 15, were taken to hospital following the incident in Walkden, Salford, late last night (March 10).

Both suffered injuries consistent with knife wounds, Greater Manchester Police say. Officers arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of wounding in connection with the incident, on Whittle Street.

Two neighbours on the street told the Manchester Evening News blood had splattered on their vehicles - a van and a car which were parked outside - while drops of blood could still be seen on the pavement this afternoon (Saturday). One of the residents, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "I was in the bathroom and all I heard was the banging on someone's car.

"It was ours. There was a bit of blood on it as well."

Several residents along Whittle Street told the M.E.N. they heard a commotion outside, but were not exactly sure what had happened.

Another, Gary Carney, said: "I came out and I could hear this shouting of 'no... no... argh'. I heard something banging against a window. I came out but I couldn't see anything, I just heard a lot of mayhem.

"As I was walking back to the door I heard a police siren and thought 'oh right, there's something going on'. I just thought it was maybe drunkenness, but this morning we found out about it, we saw it on the M.E.N."

Another neighbour, Karl Hibbert, described seeing someone who appeared to be intoxicated 'running after a car to kick it'. "We heard around 12am, it sound like a car being hit," he said.

"We got up and there was a lad walking in the middle of the street, he looked either drunk or on drugs. Two cars went past and he started to have a go at them.

"He went down to the bottom of the street and that's the last that we heard. About 10-15 minutes later, there's police vans going up, police cars"

And another resident, who gave her name as Mrs Heald, said she looked out from her home when her dogs began barking. She said: "We heard shouting - screaming and shouting. We looked out the window but didn't see anything.

"But then we heard a lad on a phone and we had another look. He was just walking past on his phone, he was only a slim lad."

Several neighbours along Whittle Street spoke of their sadness about another incident of knife crime unfolding in Greater Manchester - this time on their doorstep. One woman said: "It's mad times innit now."

Mr Carney added: "It's a shame really. It's too easy now for young lads or whatever just to pull out knives or machetes, it's awful.

"London knife crime is bad, but it's coming into the North West. It's just crazy. What next?"

In a bid to keep residents feeling safe in the community, GMP says it will be carrying out extra patrols in the area over the next few days. A Section 60 order for increased stop and search is in place until 12.16am on Sunday.

It covers the area surrounding Whittle Street, and also the areas within Manchester Road, Moss Lane, Brackley Street and Ashton Field Drive. Inspector Rod Ashton, of GMP's Salford District, said: “We have authorised stop-and-search powers in the area in response to a number of incidents over recent weeks.

"The kind of incident that happened last night won't be tolerated and GMP will take robust action to ensure that our communities feel safe and that the offender is brought to justice. I would urge members of the public who saw anything suspicious or witnessed the incident to come forward and report information to us immediately."

Anyone with information on last night's incident is urged to contact police on 0161 856 5187 or by using LiveChat on the force's website, quoting log number 3850 of March 10, 2023. Anonymous reports can be made to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111, while people aged 11 to 17 can use the charity's website Fearless.org to pass on information anonymously.
