SCOTTISHPOWER has announced its customers will get their electricity bills cut in half during the World Cup games to help people "enjoy every kick, tackle and goal".

The energy company has announced the half-price "Power Saver World Cup bonus hours" initiative will be in effect during Scotland's games, with the aim of helping football fans make the most of the event while keeping energy costs down.

Scotland's men team are making a historic return to the World Cup – the first since 1998 – following their 4-2 win against Denmark at Hampden last year.

Steve Clarke's team set off for the US earlier this week, with a friendly match against Bolivia kicking off on Saturday at 9pm.

The 50% discount for ScottishPower customers will be in effect during the following times:

  • Scotland v Haiti – Sunday, June 14, 2am (discounted period 2am-4am)
  • Scotland v Morocco – Friday, June 19, 11pm (discounted period 11pm-1am)
  • Scotland v Brazil – Wednesday, June 24, 11pm (discounted period 11pm-1am)

The initiative is also being rolled out in England and Wales, where Scottish Power also operates, and will also apply on England's games in the group stage on June 17, 23 and 27.

The energy company said it is currently preparing for what it expects will be "the biggest overnight electricity demand event in its history".

Andrew Ward, ScottishPower customer business CEO, said: “We know football brings people together and with this offer, customers can enjoy every kick, tackle and goal knowing they’re getting great value at the same time.

“We are continually striving to put our customers in control, and this is a great boost to give them more ways to score even more savings."

How to get half price electricity with Scottish Power during World Cup games

Both existing and new ScottishPower customers will soon be eligible to opt into the bonus hours initiative.

You must have a communicating smart meter and consent to half-hourly readings being automatically shared in order to take advantage of the offer.

Customers must also download the ScottishPower app and switch on notifications to receive alerts ahead of the World Cup kicking off, in order to opt in for the discount.

The discount will appear as "Power Saver Credit" on customers' bills.

The daily standing charge will be charged at normal rates.
