Scottish supermarket opening times for Queen's funeral as some set to close all day

Ahead of the Queen's funeral on Monday, September 19, supermarkets across the UK have revealed that they will close "as a mark of respect".

Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral will be held on Monday at Westminster Abbey, following a period of national mourning.

With the funeral being broadcast live in the UK and across the world, millions are set to tune in to watch the ceremony.

Shops and supermarkets are not bound by law to shut on the day of the monarch's funeral, many have confirmed that they will close out of "respect".

Sainsbury's, Aldi, and Waitrose are among the supermarkets that have announced that they will close their doors next Monday.

Aldi

In a statement released on its social media accounts, Aldi announced that all of its branches throughout the UK would shut on the day of the Queen's funeral.

It stated: "As a mark of respect, all Aldi stores will close on Monday 19th September to allow our store colleagues to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen."

Sainsbury's

All Sainsbury's shops will also be closed next Monday, the supermarket has revealed.

A spokesperson commented: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will be closed on Monday, 19 th September.

"This includes Groceries Online and Argos Fast Track delivery. Our convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm-10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items, while select stores in central London will open to serve those attending the funeral in person. We thank our customers for their understanding.”

Tesco

As reported by the Scottish Sun, Tesco stores will be shut between the hours of 10am and 2pm on the day of the funeral. While larger supermarkets will be closed, smaller shops are set to remain open.

Lidl

Lidl has confirmed that all of its UK stores will be closed on the day of the funeral.

A spokesperson said: "We can confirm that as a mark of respect and in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, we will be closing all of our stores across England, Scotland and Wales for the day of Her Majesty's funeral, Monday 19th September. We are grateful to all Lidl customers for their understanding and will be keeping all who mourn Her Royal Highness in our thoughts during this time."

Asda

As reported by the Scottish Sun, Asda stores will be shut between the hours of 10am and 2pm on the day of the funeral. While larger supermarkets will be closed, smaller shops are set to remain open.

Morrisons

As reported by the Scottish Sun, Morrisons stores will be shut between the hours of 10am and 2pm on the day of the funeral. While larger supermarkets will be closed, smaller shops are set to remain open.

Waitrose

John Lewis has announced that all of its department stores and Waitrose supermarkets will be closed on the day of the funeral, though said that some exceptions may be made for shops in London.

In a statement, it said: "The John Lewis Partnership will close its department stores and Waitrose shops on the day of the funeral of Her Majesty the Queen.

"When full details of the funeral are confirmed, an exception may be a very limited number of Waitrose stores on the route of the funeral procession to serve members of the public who we know will be lining the route for many hours. These shops will, however, close for the funeral itself."

Chief Operating Officer Andrew Murphy stated: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen. We will be closing our stores on the day of her funeral as a mark of respect, and because we believe this is the right thing to do for our Partners and customers.”

Iceland

Iceland has not yet announced its opening hours for the day of the Queen's funeral, but Edinburgh Live has reached out for more information.
