A POPULAR Scottish route has been named the best mood-boosting road trip in the whole of the UK.
The NC500 in northern Scotland bested routes across the British Isles, including Land of the Lakes in the Lake District and The Dragon’s Spine in Wales.
Introducing its ranking, well-known motoring firm Cinch pointed out that 97% of adventurers claim a planned getaway boosts their energy and spirits.
However, despite the route proving popular with visitors, there have been criticisms about over-tourism and the effect of this on locals.
Recently, the route was named on a list of “destinations suffering from untenable popularity”.
Why was the NC500 named the best mood-boosting road trip in the UK?
Discussing the Scottish road trip, Cinch said the NC500 offers a "spectacular backdrop" for travellers cruising through quaint towns like Durness, Dornoch and John O’Groats.
Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at Cinch, said those planning a road trip in Scotland should consider making their way along the "famous" route.

Starting at Inverness Castle and covering more than 500 miles of "stunning" scenery, Sam said the Scottish route is the "perfect" road trip for anyone hoping to unite historic landmarks, rolling hills and remote fishing villages.
Those looking for an "action-packed adventure" won’t be disappointed either with plenty of windswept beaches and rural pathways en route.
There is also the chance for travellers to squeeze in some trekking, mountaineering and even sea kayaking, no matter the time of the year.
While there is much to do along the NC500, the route remains controversial with locals and campaigners.
