Scottish region makes list of world’s best travel destinations for 2024

A SCOTTISH region has made a global list of the best travel destinations for 2024.

Global travel authority Lonely Planet unveiled its annual hotlist of destinations for the coming year, with Scotland’s Far North making the guide’s list of best regions in the world to travel to.

The three northern counties of Ross & Cromarty, Sutherland and Caithness are often overlooked by tour buses but offer some of the most dramatic coastlines and mountain scenery in Scotland.

Making 10th in the list, Lonely Planet highlighted its “unsung boggy interior” and coastline of “heartbreaking beauty”.

The full entry read: “2024 will hopefully mean new recognition for this region, as it aims to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status, explore its unsung boggy interior and a coastline of heartbreaking beauty. Up on the roof of Scotland is the evocatively named Flow Country, one of Europe’s bleakly beautiful ecosystems.”

Spain, meanwhile, tops the sustainable travel list. Best country went to Mongolia and best city went to Nairobi, Kenya.

Here is the list of the best regions for travel in 2024, according to Lonely Planet:

  1. Western Balkans’ Trans Dinarica Cycling Route
  2. Kangaroo Island, South Australia
  3. Tuscany, Italy
  4. Donegal, Ireland
  5. Pais Vasco, Spain
  6. Southern Thailand
  7. Swahili Coast, Tanzania
  8. Montana, USA
  9. Saafelden Leogang, Austria
  10. Far North Scotland
