Scottish primary school locked down as armed police respond to 'weapon' report

A SCOTTISH school has been locked down and armed police called in after a man with an “offensive weapon” was reported.

Officers swooped in on Glendevon Road, in Glenrothes, on Wednesday morning, and told the nearby Pitteuchar East Primary School to lock down.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident, and the school later confirmed that all children were “safe and well”.

Police confirmed that armed officers had been sent to the scene.

The Sun reported that the man had allegedly been carrying a machete.

The SNP MP for Glenrothes and Central Fife, Peter Grant, thanked police and staff at the school for their “swift action”.

He said: “Thanks to Police Scotland and the staff of Pitteuchar East Primary School for their swift action in keeping everyone safe.

“As this is a live police investigation I ask people not to get into social media speculation.”

Pitteuchar East Primary School headteacher Jennifer Knussen said: “There was a police incident in nearby streets this morning.

“We were asked by police to get all children into school and nursery as quickly as possible, which we did.

“We have now been advised that the incident is over and please be assured that children are safe and well.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the possession of an offensive weapon on Glendevon Road, Glenrothes.

“Police received the report around 8.30 on Wednesday.

“Due to the nature of the incident, armed officers were in attendance.

“There was no threat to the wider public.”
