Scottish Liberal Democrats suspend councillor charged with electoral fraud

A councillor has been suspended by the Scottish Liberal Democrats after being charged with electoral fraud.

The party took the action on Sunday after a newspaper report about Aileen Polson, who represents Milngavie on East Dunbartonshire council.

The Sunday Times reported that she and her husband, fellow councillor Andrew Polson, had been charged with falsely claiming that they lived in the council area when their family home was in Glasgow’s east end.

The couple allegedly used an address in Bearsden to register on the electoral roll.

Andrew Polson, an Independent on the same council, used to be a Tory and was co-leader of the local authority.

A Scottish Liberal Democrats spokesperson said: "Ms Polson has been suspended from the party and this is now a matter for the police."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 50-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman have been arrested and charged in connection with the Representation of The People Act 1983 on Thursday, 6 October, 2022. They are due to appear in court at a later date.”
