Scottish FA officials will meet with UK counterparts to discuss a trial on temporary concussion substitutions next week.
It's understood the four home nations - Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland - will discuss the possibility of a united position on a prospective trial.
The governing bodies are all set to attend an International Football Association Board (IFAB) meeting next week with the matter on the agenda of issues to be discussed.
Should an agreed position be achieved then it's thought a vote could take place as early as next week or be tabled for the IFAB Annual General Meeting in March.
World players' union FIFPRO and head injury campaigners have previously called on a temporary concussion substitution trial.
Any law change could see players temporarily subbed from the field of play to allow more time for medics to assess players suspected to have suffered a concussion injury.
IFAB previously faced scrutiny after a proposed trial for temporary concussion subs was rejected in June last year.
“It was agreed that further education is needed to ensure the trial protocols are applied correctly,” IFAB said on the matter last year when substitution rules were altered to allow five changes a match.
FIFPRO and the World Leagues Forum wrote to IFAB last month to request a temporary sub trial be granted for the next Premier League, Ligue 1 and Major League Soccer competitions.
The letter - seen by the PA news agency - read: “In the case of a suspected concussion, it is well established by international scientific standards that a proper assessment requires more time than is currently available to medical staffs on the field of play; in addition, medical experts agree that this assessment should be conducted under quiet conditions.”
It continued: “We do recognise that not all suspected concussions will successfully be determined during temporary substitution but we are convinced that the probability for better informed decision-making will significantly increase.”
